Foods can improve all aspects of our bodies, so it’s no wonder that some help one of the most important organs of all- the brain! Throughout your baby’s development, you may be wondering what the best foods are to help their brain. Worry no more – here are some of our favorite brain-boosting foods.

 

  1. Avocado – Okay, so maybe now we get what the avocado craze is all about. Not only does it taste good no matter how you eat it, it’s also good for promoting brain development! Avocados contain healthy fats, one of which being monosaturated fat. This fat keeps the blood flowing, which in turn helps your brain! Best part? They’re super mushy and perfect for those who don’t have their full set of canines yet!
  2. Salmon – When we were ‘sea’keeing info about brain food, Salmon came up every time! Several deep-water fish, like Salmon, contain Omega-3 essential fatty acids. These acids are essential in brain function. Salmon is the winner, since it contains some of the highest Omega-3 levels of any fish.
  3. Turmeric – When you hear about turmeric, usually it’s in reference to immunity. New studies have found that turmeric contains medicinal compounds called curcuminoids. One of those curcuminoids is curcumin. Curcumin can increase brain levels of BDNF, which is a growth hormone that functions in your brain. Thus, in younger people, neuron growth is promoted and the risk of brain issues is reduced in adults. It’s a win-win for babies and parents! Best of all? Turmeric can be used in many dishes for baby!
  4. Leafy greens – When you tell your little one to “Eat your greens!” it’s coming from a place of love… and now, science too. Not only are leafy greens rich in Iron, they’re also filled with Vitamin K, Lutein and beta-carotene. Leafy greens are linked to lower risks of brain dysfunction later in life. Kale for example, is filled with antioxidants that promote brain cell growth. B Vitamins, including Folate, are essential micronutrients that work together towards several aspects of brain function. Greens are super easy to utilize in baby’s purees or smoothies for your older ones!
  5. Eggs – We’re pretty egg-cited about this one! Eggs are a great source of protein and an easy snack to give to your little one. They also contain Choline, which aids in memory development. Details, you may be ask? Choline is needed to produce acetylcholine, which is the transmitter for memory, mood and muscle control among other brain functions.
